Rumour: 'SA #3 in line for 3G iPhone'

Ok, one thing we should expect for a while are plenty rumours over local release dates for the iPhone. I don’t think Vodacom actually know when they are getting the phone and I am sure they are at the whim of Apple. And Apple would never ever change the goalposts from time to time, would […]

New iPhone available in South Africa July 20

According to tech journalist and Stuff Magazine editor Toby Shapshak, Vodacom will be launching the new 3G iphone, also popularly know as the “iPhone 2.0”, on July 20. Vodacom’s launch is part of a 10-country deal that Vodafone announced last month, confirming speculation over the iPhone announcement. The phone is purportedly slimmer and sleaker than […]

Vodacom set to shake up media scene

Vodacom, best known as a cellphone service provider, is set to become one of the country’s most influential media players, trumping many big, traditional media players. The numbers are certainly impressive. Some would say Vodacom is already an influential media player, with a claimed monthly audience of 1,4-million unique users and 16-million page impressions that […]

Vodacom's foray into mobile advertising

Blogging from PublishOnline in Cape Town… Graunt Kruger who works for Vodacom’s mobile advertising department had the audience at the conference gasping at the big numbers and big strategies. Graunt disagrees with me, but Vodacom — who are now Online Publishing Association members — are looking more and more like a media company these days. […]

One million SA broadband users by 2009?

At KUGM Online Marketing conference in Rosebank Rudolph Muller from that excellent South African website, My Adsl, reckons there will be one-million broadbrand connections by 2009. It’s a figure way over the predictions we are used to hearing. Arthur Goldstuck reckons there will be 277 000 broadband users by the end of 2006, which is […]

Vodacom HSDPA 3G problems

Update: 13/06/2006 Problem solved Ok I got an SMS telling me the service has been fixed. It has now been working for the last two weeks efficiently. Credit goes to Vodacom for fixing it, however it has taken some time and perhaps their communication could have been a bit better. Now that it works, I am loving the speed. Apparently we were one of the first country’s in teh world to get the HSDPA upgrade. Go South Africa.

Update: 09/06/2006 Still no contact so I wrote an email asking them to come back to me about beginning of this week. Yep, its Friday and have not heard from them. Not terribly efficient service. Vodacom are lucky that they have a such a good product from Vodafone… its a pity they cannot back up the good product by service. I’ll post here if they ever get back to me.

Update: 30/05/2006 It appears that Vodacom fixed whatever problem seemed to be occuring because i now get regular access again. Haven’t received a mail from them confirming this, nor the promised contact from the local network operator guy… maybe I am wrong to expect world class efficiency from company that makes millions in profits.

Apparently South Africa’s Vodacom is the second biggest network in the worldwide Vodafone group, beating even its own network in the UK.

But I’d like to ask: Is Vodacom the network of choice any longer in South Africa? I have a new HSDPA 3G card (generously traded in by Vodacom for free) and I never seem to be able to connect at certain periods of the evening. I constantly get error 619 or error 31. I used to have the Novatell card and never had a problem from my house in Linden. But ever since changing to the HSDPA card, I have had error after error. Admittedly a friend of mine who also uses an HSDPA card says he does not have any problems.

Google Zeitgeist

What does a Google search say about a country?

Andy Higgins, MD of bidorbuy alerted me to this fascinating look at “Google Zeitgeist” — or a little less sensationally put, the top 10 searches in each country via Google.
