Bolton Deventer riddle: Closer to home than I think?

56118839797334051666.pngHad one of the truly more bizarre discussions today with a colleague of mine, Vincent Maher. I blatently accused him of being the person behind Bolton Deventer — the strange-looking “web marketer” who runs a cheesy blog, who also seems to worship the God of Nelspruit internet Guy McClaren. Vincent/Bolton flatly deny this. But I’ve had my suspicions…

Even stranger — during this very discussion with Vincent this afternoon, Carly Ritz, who works over at The Times, pops up on Gmail chat with a link to Times editor Ray Harley’s blog who is also thinking very much the same thing about Bolton/Vincent.

At first I thought Mr Deventer was an invention of those clever marketing guys at Quirk, but I was quickly set straight by their boss Rob Stokes (I’m taking you at your word, Rob). But I’ve changed my mind. Vincent, by the way, introduced me to Deventer and his splog. The man writes appallingly and hasn’t got a clue, yet paradoxically is strangely internet savvy. I don’t know… but call it the wording or turn of phrase on Bolton’s blog and even specifically on Bolton’s photoshop T-Shirts, or the recent use of Deventer’s iStockphoto (which we recently started using at the office)… I just dunno…

Desperately trying to defend himself, Vincent also mentioned to me it’s impossible that it is him due to the date stamps on the posts. But clearly the post times are being manipulated (it’s easy to do) as Deventer’s response to Ray Hartley’s blog was at 2:53 pm, an hour BEFORE Ray’s post which was at 16:16pm. Another point is that almost immediately after I pointed Vincent to Ray’s post (via Carly),Vince suddenly had to be somewhere quickly and dashed out the office early. A short while later — low-and-behold there appears the new Deventer post in response to Ray.

What we do now know is that there is no such person as Bolton Deventer… the only thing we are not sure about is: who is behind the Bolt On? Whoever it is, it’s a very funny and very clever creation… Come on, own up! You’ve been bust.
