56118839797334051666.pngHad one of the truly more bizarre discussions today with a colleague of mine, Vincent Maher. I blatently accused him of being the person behind Bolton Deventer — the strange-looking “web marketer” who runs a cheesy blog, who also seems to worship the God of Nelspruit internet Guy McClaren. Vincent/Bolton flatly deny this. But I’ve had my suspicions…

Even stranger — during this very discussion with Vincent this afternoon, Carly Ritz, who works over at The Times, pops up on Gmail chat with a link to Times editor Ray Harley’s blog who is also thinking very much the same thing about Bolton/Vincent.

At first I thought Mr Deventer was an invention of those clever marketing guys at Quirk, but I was quickly set straight by their boss Rob Stokes (I’m taking you at your word, Rob). But I’ve changed my mind. Vincent, by the way, introduced me to Deventer and his splog. The man writes appallingly and hasn’t got a clue, yet paradoxically is strangely internet savvy. I don’t know… but call it the wording or turn of phrase on Bolton’s blog and even specifically on Bolton’s photoshop T-Shirts, or the recent use of Deventer’s iStockphoto (which we recently started using at the office)… I just dunno…

Desperately trying to defend himself, Vincent also mentioned to me it’s impossible that it is him due to the date stamps on the posts. But clearly the post times are being manipulated (it’s easy to do) as Deventer’s response to Ray Hartley’s blog was at 2:53 pm, an hour BEFORE Ray’s post which was at 16:16pm. Another point is that almost immediately after I pointed Vincent to Ray’s post (via Carly),Vince suddenly had to be somewhere quickly and dashed out the office early. A short while later — low-and-behold there appears the new Deventer post in response to Ray.

What we do now know is that there is no such person as Bolton Deventer… the only thing we are not sure about is: who is behind the Bolt On? Whoever it is, it’s a very funny and very clever creation… Come on, own up! You’ve been bust.

  2. […] Hmmmm, I thought I had my eureka moment on the Bolton Deventer riddle after a bit of sleuthing work this weekend. I was checking the source code of Deventer’s blog to see if the person behind the persona had slipped up and was using the identical Google analytics code profile (indicated in the source by a unique code in the javascript) somewhere else…. say on his/her real blog, which would expose the real identity. […]

  3. If Bolton is the work of Vincent, then he must pay a forfeit, like, for example, being forced to blog on typepad for a year instead of WordPress. 😉

  4. We’re actually all missing the point here — the bigger question is actually: who is Keyser Soze??

  5. @ jaxon — wasn’t Bolton responsible for creating the core kernel of the original Mosaic browser and Netscape 1.0?

@ Carls & Wezz — i’m having doubts that it is Vincent

    @ nic — hehe v funny post

  6. Matthew – I assure you that Bolton Deventer exists. He is a legend amongst some of the older generation of internet users, back when the only forums we had were BBS’s.

  7. Can’t you guys see the resemblence between Vincent and Bolton???

Obviously it’s an image of Vincent of a couple of years back.

    You guys are fooled easily.

  8. Hey Justin — yeah that popped into my mind. the UK connection is the one thing thats bugging me about my theory… but it could be a red herring too :-) LOL… will be interesting to find out who it is…. i wonder if we ever will.

  9. and well done on keeping us all from working!

  10. This has been too damn hilarious. Vincent if it is you well done, great work, inspiring even.

  11. Matt what I have figured out is that Bolton’s blog is set to GMT timezone which means he’s 2 hours behind us. This is a default with WordPress and clearly he has no clue how to change it :)

  12. very smart inspector matt!

  13. Hahaha matt, I am very interested to see where all this is going!
