I write here as an out-and-out, big Survivor fan (watched all the US series) and someone very excited about the new Survivor South Africa. But it has been shocking. The host has been terrible (he can’t speak properly and my ironing board has more personality), the shows have been dreadfully boring, the quality of production (especially the sound and editing) has also been poor.
The second show held promise, but ever since it has just plodded along, almost mirroring the mono-tone of the host Mark Bayly. The warning signs were there, starting with Bayley’s first promo where it somehow felt like his mouth was separate from his body when he delivered the first promo. He looks low on confidence, self-conscious and feels like he has practiced his lines a million times. No spontaneity. We knew Jeff Probst was a hard act to follow, but this host doesn’t get out of the starting block.
The fact that all the contestants are from similar middle-class backgrounds with similar ages means there has been very little tension or flash points. I believe this was the first criticism levelled at the show before it even started. The editing is slow and laboured in sharp contrast to the US survivor. Why are the tribal councils so long? Why are they devoid of any kind of tension?
The ultimate sign for me? We forgot to watch the last episode. We even forgot to watch the catch-up series. Which is strange for an obessive-compulsive survivor fan. I may continue to watch it while I flip between channels, but I am doing it only because it is a “South African” survivor and have a morbid fascination.I watch under protest.
I may not watch at all. I don’t really care. Like the very average show it is, it fails to ignite any strong feelings either way. Pity. I was so looking forward to it.
