Met Craig of Craigslist, that awesome, minimalist classifieds site started in the US. We were at a cocktail party lastnight in a rather nice Manhattan penthouse suite, near Union Square. Also finally met Mary McBride, the Goldman Sachs Global Leaders organiser who was putting the event on…

Craig is an affable, quirky guy with a keen interest in politics and undoing evil everywhere from his laptop and also minding the gap wherever he can. I’d hate to see him on the London Underground. It’s great to meet an online Silicon Valley pioneer in the flesh… he’s cool.

The Craigslist operation is now 21 people, which seems kind of small… but it is typical online, done the right way — you don’t need huge armies to run the biggest of online operations — look at Google and compare its market cap and staff with the next biggest (non-online) company and you will see what I mean…

I didn’t know we had a South African Craigslist… wait I did know we had South African Craigslists… but heard it wasn’t doing very well…. or it hasn’t been pushed or marketed correctly. It is such a great concept and the minimalist, basic style of the Craigslist websites really works nicely… it should be doing better over here….

Check out Craigslist, Joburg, for example.

  1. but it should just be a matter of time…

  2. Yeah the South African Craiglists haven’t been marketed all… In my opinion there’s no way they will catch on here without some public awareness campaign or high profile SA bloggers posting about them…
