Now the NY Times is a great newspaper. For buck a day (I’m talkin’ like a New Yorker now) its awesome value and i’ve bought it every day while here.
It’s in the Berliner format — and it is by far the dominant newspaper here. SA’s broadasheets should consider converting — a broadsheet is just so unwieldy these days for readers. In any case who notices all those ads way down at the bottom of the broadsheets… so even from an advertising perspective — if you, the newspaperman-owner-media-mogul guy, want the adverts to be noticed more, go Berliner and please the guys that pay for your salary and newsprint. The Guardian (my second-most favourite newspaper) has done it.
Now, it is interesting to note that the Berliner format is about as wide as my widescreen laptop screen, hmmm…. convergence or coincidence?!?!
Since I’ve been here I’ve noticed that the The Times’ mostly leads with international news on the front page and then subsequent pages afyter that. It carries much more world news than our papers back home, for example.
I suppose this, New York, is an international city, so it makes sense. The international news is focused on Iraq, south Korea, Israel, Palestine, Gaza etc… the places the US has interests in or is interested in.
